Introduzione

Giving an oral presentation is a daunting prospect for some.
Even the more confident can find presenting a difficult skill to master.

However, we must all stand and deliver at some stage, whether to share ideas formally or informally with colleagues, to help pitch for projects or to present new data to key opinion leaders.
There is no substitute for giving presentations, and the more you give, the more likely you are to improve. However, we can all benefit from spending time specifically focusing on good preparation, good use of voice and body language, having a strategy for dealing with questions and confronting any presentation nerves. We deal with these elements in the first half of the workshop.
However, an aim of this workshop is also to provide participants with a key training technique to improve presentation skills: a ‘safe’ environment in which they have the opportunity to deliver a presentation, receive constructive feedback and listen to others giving presentations and provide them with constructive feedback.

During this highly practical second half of the workshop, each participant will therefore can deliver a short presentation (3 minutes) with up to 6 slides prepared before the workshop.
Participants and workshop leader will give constructive feedback.

In this workshop, we will consider:

  • What you need to know before preparing slides.
  • Managing equipment and the environment.
  • Rehearsing and keeping to time.
  • Increasing the impact of an oral presentation.
  • Presentation nerves.
  • Voice and body language.
  • Questions and difficult people.
  • Individual participant presentations.

Practical elements of the workshop will include:

  • Critique of a well-known orator: how they use voice and body language to maximise interest and impact.
  • Participants will have the opportunity to deliver a short presentation (3 minutes) with up to 6 slides prepared before the workshop. Participants and lecturer will give constructive feedback.

This workshop is suitable for anyone working in life sciences who needs to deliver oral presentations: presentations to colleagues, training colleagues, speaking at meetings or pitching to potential clients for new business.
Participants should have some experience in delivering oral presentations and want to reflect on or improve their oral presentation skills.
Participants should be confident communicating in English, particularly as they will have the opportunity to deliver a short presentation in English.

A note for those who don’t like the sound of this!
Whilst not compulsory, every participant will have the opportunity to give a presentation, but you will be in a ‘safe’ environment! It will be OK to be nervous, OK to forget what you were going to say, OK to receive constructive criticism, OK to give constructive criticism – it won’t matter and everyone will be in the same situation.
It’s your opportunity to ‘have a go’ at presenting, receive feedback and learn from others.
The idea is to enjoy this and have some fun!

The workshop is intended to be a ‘two-way’ learning and discussion experience questions and subsequent discussion are welcome at any time during the workshop.

– There will be a little preparatory work – prepare a short presentation to last around 3 minutes, accompanied by up to 6 slides.
– Lecturer will deliver short presentations on the programme topics.
– A series of polling questions will be used to illustrate participants attitudes and perceptions about delivering oral presentations.
